One thing I've noticed from watching videos such as these is the consistent oversight of the role of the Orthodox Church in this. Russian and Ukrainian identity has been intertwined with religion as much, if not more so, than anything else. To be Russian (as well as Ukrainian) was to be Orthodox, as opposed to the Catholicism of the Western Slavs in Poland, Bohemia/Moravia, etc. The struggles of the time (Northern Crusade, et al) had as much to do with religion as they did with politics. The now Patriarch of Moscow was originally based in Kiev until the Mongol invasions; this is the historical basis for the Russian claims to Ukraine. The establishment of an autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and the transfer of church property from those under the Moscow Patriarchate to the new Kiev Patriarchate 'legitimized' the perception of oppression of ethnic Russians in Ukraine; the merits of this are, indeed, dubious. The Union of Brest, establishing what is now the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, has always been a sore spot as well. This Union was most definitely ethno-political in nature; it established a distinct Ukrainian identity, as opposed to Polish (who were Roman Catholic) and Russian (fellow Orthodox, yet not in control of Galicia and Volhynia, at that time). The "Uniates' entered Union under these terms: that their Orthodox customs and faith not be undermined, and that the Church, as a whole, be on equal footing within the Commonwealth (and, later, under Austrian rule), in exchange for loyalty to the crown(s) and submission to the authority of the Papacy. We need to remember the climate of the times before our 'modern' era. Western Europe was in the throws of the Reformation and, soon enough, the wars of religion that ensued. Russia was still essentially a backwater in Europe. Indeed, nascent Ukrainian nationalism had it's genesis within the clergy of this UGCC. At the same time, Ukrainian nationalism was flowering within the Zaparozhian Sich. The Cossacks fought (albeit intermittently) to establish a Ukrainian nation, independent of both the Russian Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the end, the Sich sided with the Russians, primarily for the reason that the Russians are Orthodox. It is no wonder that the strongest support for Ukrainian independence, and for use of Ukrainian as the official language, lays in the western part of the country. This is not to say that there is no support in the east. While the east was settled by ethnic Russians during the colonial Nova Rossiya period under Catherine the Great, events in the late 19th/early 20th century (alluded to in the video) strengthened Ukrainian identity in the area; occupation by the Central/Axis powers, Soviet oppression of Ukrainian language and culture (it has been said that without the permanent establishment of a socialist government in Ukraine, the USSR would either never have formed, would have fallen apart, or would not have been anywhere near as strong as it was), and the Holodomor. It is obvious that Putin is using the religious history and undertones as a front for this invasion, but one must consider them to understand popular support within Russia and eastern Ukraine for the invasion, aside from the Soviet-like tactics of the Kremlin in 'influencing' popular opinion.
